I bet you didn’t know that it was Joey Reynolds who gave the 4 Seasons their biggest break. Well, he did. And I watched the film Jersey Boys with Joey over the weekend in a Manhattan movie theater.

This is becoming a regular thing lately. The entrants into Rock & Roll Heaven…and even POP, COUNTRY, JAZZ and HIP-HOP-types are lining up faster and faster. Have you noticed?

How can the Moody Blues or Yes NOT be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but Genesis IS? I think it’s because they’re not in the clique.

Simon & Garfunkel are IN. Hall & Oates NOT.

So, what did we learn from “Sandy,” that incredible storm dubbed “Frankenstorm,” or in my own words, “Count Stormula?”

I suppose by now you have either seen pictures in the tabloid newspapers or supermarket check-out lines of Madonna literally taking off her clothes on stage in Los Angeles last weekend. “Show-Off” should be her new name. Better yet; how about, “I’ll do anything to get publicity”. Who needs radio? Who needs records? Just strip.

Let’s get back together and “Do It Again.” The logic seemed rather simple. Get the original members of The Beach Boys together on one stage (and even include the ‘replacement’ for Brian Wilson, who joined the group in 1965, Bruce Johnston.

When ya heard Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson) died, I’m sure you did what I did. I sang the whole theme song to The Jefferson’s out loud. “Well we’re movin’ on up….”

There’s one thing you can count on when you mix the following: alcohol (lots of it), bottles (lots of them), two hot-headed Hip-Hop millionaires (one shirtless) at 4 o’clock in the morning in a basement nightclub, two different large “posses,” one uber-famous woman (who’s apparently been with both hot-heads), surveillance cameras, and even a YouTube video, what do you get?

I was talking to my neighbor last weekend, and my cell phone rang in the middle of the conversation. Having seen who was on the line, I felt torn between answering it or not.

Perhaps Bee Gees songs are your guilty pleasure. Perchance Donna Summer disco tunes are your fudge-covered Oreos®. Both acts received multiple accolades as entertainers; and yet, they’ve also been derided by fickle music audiences and critics. However; their collective accomplishments cannot be denied.

Some people make music, some promote and analyze it and the rest of us simply listen.

A tough decision had to be made immediately after an old radio friend of mine and I left a movie theater to see the very funny and quite authentic film, The Three Stooges.

It’s likely you’ve seen the video of a 29 year-old Canadian guy, detained for disputing a charge of public intoxication, riding in the back of a squad car of the Royal Mounted Police (I thought they rode horses) singing a Queen song while air-drumming.

Why are younger people more interested in what’s within reach of the driver inside the car, and not what the car looks like on the outside, or the kind of performance it has?

Back in 1987, while I did a show called “THE TIME MACHINE”  I was talking about the already long list of people from the popular music world who had died with a friend Lou “Skip” Pulcrano.

That certainly was a swift comeback.

Whitney Houston. Her death is sad, but somewhat predicable, unfortunately.

Every morning, after I wipe the sleepy crud from my eyes, I open my email.

Am I some kind of a nut? I’m working on the radio the Sunday of that game you’re not supposed to call by its real name or you’ll get busted. I’m suspecting the guy I’m filling in for (Ron Parker) will be watching “awesome-bowl” from the confines of a fine establishment, or at least his living room. That’s fine with me, because deep in my heart, I know most people in America would rather listen to ME as opposed to the virtually all-day PRE-game shows on other radio stations and TV (LMFAO.)

It was five years ago today that I was fired by a “family-owned” radio company for “making too much money.”

Sadly, that very station now has ratings that are below ANY in their market (with the exception of so-called “Public Radio”). Is that a happenstance? The answer is likely not. There, I got that off my chest.

By bigjay on 12/19/2011 3:36 PM
I performed at a corporate Christmas party recently for a newspaper company in upstate New York, playing a wide variety of music, much of which I have played on the radio for over 4 decades.

So I’m in line (or is it ON line?) at my local supermarket the other day, and purchased a copy of the latest Guitar World magazine with The Beatles on the front cover. Why?
By bigjay on 11/21/2011 8:08 AM
I’m gonna be brutally honest. Much of the music coming out of the radio today is mediocre at best. When I say radio, I mean in all of its mutations—over-the-air, Internet, satellite, etc…

I enjoyed writing 11/11/11. But as I sit here and ponder that we’ll only get one more like that this century, it made me think of my beloved radio business; and I wonder what the radio landscape will look like when we hit 12/12/12.
By bigjay on 10/17/2011 8:27 AM
I could sit here all day and write jokes about the recent protests gaining more attention daily across not only the country but the world.
By bigjay on 8/30/2011 8:36 AM
Radio…ah yes, over-the-air radio! That quaint fad we take for granted will always be there. Radio…that service that’s been in operation since the early 20th Century.
By bigjay on 7/12/2011 8:49 AM
When I hear of the passing of the people who made the records I bought during my prime record-buying years, it makes me feel more and more mortal each time.
By bigjay on 6/21/2011 8:55 AM
I’ve had this happen several times during my career, and it happened again not long ago. I’m in line (or ON line if you’re from the NY area) at a local supermarket (grocery store if you’re NOT from the NY area) and suddenly someone behind me says, “Are you that guy on the radio?”
By bigjay on 5/31/2011 9:03 AM
I’ll admit it. I’m a nerd. What IS a nerd? There are a couple of definitions:

Yeah…that was the right answer Jim from Toms River, NJ - “Twistin' USA” was the B side to the re-release of "The Twist"!!
By bigjay on 4/25/2011 9:13 AM
From the looks of things in some circles, the answer is yes. For years, we’ve been hoodwinked into thinking that “digital” was “all-that.” But for many people, that’s not true.

I’ve been in Times Square Monday through Friday. No, not selling boiled hot dogs or crappy umbrellas (which have a similar taste.)
By bigjay on 2/28/2011 9:22 AM
I was given the chance by a man named Joe Murray and (someone who to this day is a VERY good friend of mine) Paul Most.
